CFPB - Combat Harmful Debt Collection
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) gives consumers rights that compel collectors to prove that an alleged debt is both legitimate and accurate, and prohibits certain conduct by third-party collectors. If you have questions about whether the amount of a debt is accurate, whether the debt even belongs to you, or if you simply prefer not to be called by the collector, use one of these five sample letters compiled by the CFPB that will help you exercise your rights under federal law:
